Meet a Mentor, Build Your Network

On November 6, 2013 Zicklin Women in Business hosted the third annual mentorship event. This year, we were pleased to have professionals from Barclays, EY, KPMG, Moody’s and PwC join us for this early morning mentoring program at Baruch College. Many students had the opportunity to meet with three or even four mentors of their top choices.

The breakfast and networking started at 8:30AM. Many students took advantage of the opportunity to speak with various mentors during this portion of the event. Several students who were not able to stay for mentoring sessions were still able to meet with professionals and grow their networks. The Meet a Mentor event served as a stage for not only the students to network with the professionals, but also for the professionals to network with other professionals. It turned out that mentors from the same company (different departments) did not know each other until they came to this event.

At 9AM, Fred Burke, the new Director of Graduate Career Management Center, welcomed students and professionals with an opening speech about the importance of networking and building professional relationships, and thanking professionals for volunteering their time in advising Baruch students. Promptly after that, mentoring sessions started.

During the mentoring sessions, students were able to get their resumes reviewed and commented, gained general ideas about what their interested fields are like and what other things they need to do in order to get closer to the goal, and also broaden their understanding of other industries. Through this event, some students also helped connect their friends who were not able to attend the event with the professionals. It was a win-win situation for everyone.

Zicklin Women in Business received a very positive feedback from both students and professionals in attendance. We are proud to put together an event that brought such a great value for both sides. Thank you ZWIB team for working hard on it.
